SKINNINGROVE CO-ORDINATORS UPDATE

Skinningrove Beck

The consultants Binnie Ferguson McIlveen are currently finalising the design with the University of Newcastle for the main filter. Issues surrounding services that run through the proposed main treatment filter site have now been resolved. It is envisaged the filter will be up and running by the year end, with the construction starting at the beginning of August.
As Les Orange from Binnie Ferguson McIlveen explained at the last Skinningrove Link-Up meeting on 8th June, delays had occurred through having to completely redesign the scheme with the University of Newcastle in order to reduce the number of filter changes.
With this project requiring a long term maintenance programme, it is widely appreciated that we need to get it right first time. Hopefully this is the last complication before we have a filter in the ground.

Artist Residency

Jean Grant, the artist appointed by the residents as a follow on from the Forum, organised a step-clearance project which took place on the path at the back of the Co-op up to Carlin How. Eleven residents helped out on Saturday 10th June, and many people within the village have commented on the improvements. Jean will be organising another practical project within the village soon, and anyone is welcome to help out.

Skinningrove Foreshore

Skinningrove Redundant Buildings

Drawings have now been produced illustrating the potential combination of community uses within the building, which were presented at the last Skinningrove Link-Up meeting. No decisions on redevelopment will be made until the building has been acquired.
I am at present continuing negotiations with the Council to access the building and use it as an office base, and a place to hold meetings. At this time the drawings will be displayed for discussion. I will keep you informed once I
Know of any firm decisions.

Single Regeneration Budget (SRB) Round 6

A bid has now been submitted for the whole parish ie. Loftus, Carlin How, Skinningrove, Liverton Mines and Easington.
In my proposal for Skinningrove, I have included the redevelopment of Whitecliffe School and the removal of the redundant pipelines and other works, as part of the Environmental Improvements to Kilton Beck. We should know by the end of this year whether or not we’ve been successful-Fingers crossed!!

Quaking Houses

I am arranging a visit to the Quaking Houses project in Durham. This community suffered similar minewater pollution problems to Skinningrove, and worked with Artists and the University of Newcastle to find the best solution, both technically and aesthetically of removing the pollution. The visit is to provide an opportunity for residents to talk with the community of Quaking Houses, in order to learn from their experiences and make decisions on how a big a part people see arts projects taking place as part of the regeneration of Skinningrove.

The provisional date for the visit is Wednesday 12th July, leaving Skinningrove Square at 10.30am, and returning at 3.30pm. Lunch will be provided. A list will be circulated at the next Skinningrove Link-UP meeting on Thursday 6th July in Timms Coffee House, in order that we can firm up numbers for the bus, if you want to attend but can’t make the meeting, you can contact me at Loftus Development Trust on 01287 641342.
